A Jyotirlinga is a place where Lord Shiva is believed to have manifested as a self-born column of light (jyoti). The twelve are named in the Dwadash Jyotirlinga Stotram: Somnath in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna at Srisailam, Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain, Omkareshwar on the Narmada, Kedarnath in the Himalaya, Bhimashankar in the Sahyadri, Kashi Vishwanath at Varanasi, Trimbakeshwar at the Godavari’s source, Vaidyanath at Deoghar, Nageshwar near Dwarka, Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu and Grishneshwar beside Ellora. Tradition holds that reciting these twelve names daily erases the sins of seven births, and that completing the actual darshan of all twelve grants moksha. The journey spans ten states; the optimised 21-day route is sequenced to minimise backtracking and timed to the May–November window when Himalayan Kedarnath is open. It may be done in one continuous trip or split into three regional legs over a year or two — the crowning pilgrimage of a Shiva devotee’s life. The twelve Jyotirlingas, in the order of the traditional stotram: 1) Somnath (Gujarat) — the first Jyotirlinga on the Arabian Sea coast, rebuilt seventeen times through history. 2) Mallikarjuna (Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh) — a hill-shrine in the Nallamala forest, where Shiva and Parvati are worshipped together. 3) Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh) — the south-facing Dakshinamurti, famous for its dawn Bhasma Aarti. 4) Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh) — on the Om-shaped Mandhata island in the Narmada. 5) Kedarnath (Uttarakhand) — the highest Jyotirlinga, in the Himalaya at 3,583 m, open only May–November. 6) Bhimashankar (Maharashtra) — hidden in the Sahyadri rainforest at the source of the Bhima river.
7) Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh) — Lord of the eternal city on the Ganga, the spiritual heart of the yatra. 8) Trimbakeshwar (Maharashtra) — the only three-faced Jyotirlinga (Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh) at the source of the Godavari. 9) Vaidyanath (Deoghar, Jharkhand) — Baba Baidyanath Dham, the healer-form of Shiva. 10) Nageshwar (Gujarat) — near Dwarka, the lord of serpents. 11) Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu) — on Pamban island, worshipped by Lord Ram before the bridge to Lanka. 12) Grishneshwar (Maharashtra) — the twelfth and final, beside the UNESCO Ellora Caves, the traditional completion-point of the full yatra. Each shrine carries its own legend, architecture and climate — together they map the sacred geography of Shiva across the whole of Bharat.

The first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, on the Arabian Sea coast of Saurashtra. Revered as the shrine that was destroyed and rebuilt many times, it is the eternal abode of Someshwar (the Moon-god’s lord).
MallikarjunaSrisailam, Andhra Pradesh
On the Nallamala hills above the Krishna river, this is both a Jyotirlinga (Shiva as Mallikarjuna) and a Shakti Peetha (Bhramaramba Devi) — a rare union of Shiva and Shakti.
MahakaleshwarUjjain, Madhya Pradesh
The only south-facing (dakshinamukhi) Jyotirlinga and the lord of time (Mahakal) at Ujjain. Famous for the Bhasma Aarti at dawn, offered with sacred ash.
OmkareshwarMandhata Island, Madhya Pradesh
Set on the Om-shaped Mandhata island in the Narmada river. The shrine is one of two lingas here, worshipped as the form of the sacred syllable Om.
KedarnathRudraprayag, Uttarakhand
The highest Jyotirlinga at 3,583 m in the Garhwal Himalayas, open only May–Nov. Also one of the Char Dham of Uttarakhand and part of the Panch Kedar.
BhimashankarPune district, Maharashtra
In the Sahyadri (Western Ghats), the source of the Bhima river and the spot where Shiva slew the demon Tripurasura. Surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary.
Kashi VishwanathVaranasi, Uttar Pradesh
The lord of the universe on the banks of the Ganga in Kashi, the holiest of Shiva’s shrines. A darshan here is said to grant moksha in the city of liberation.
TrimbakeshwarNashik, Maharashtra
At the source of the Godavari river below Brahmagiri hill. Its linga uniquely bears three faces — Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — and it is a key Kumbh and Kala Sarpa puja site.
Vaidyanath (Baidyanath)Deoghar, Jharkhand
Shiva as the divine physician (Vaidya) at Deoghar. It is the great destination of the Shravani Mela, when lakhs of kanwariyas carry Ganga water from Sultanganj.
NageshwarNear Dwarka, Gujarat
Near Dwarka on the Gujarat coast, the lord of serpents (Nageshwar) who protects devotees from poison and fear. Marked by a towering Shiva statue.
Ramanathaswamy (Rameshwaram)Rameswaram Island, Tamil Nadu
On Rameswaram island, the linga said to be consecrated by Lord Ram before crossing to Lanka. Famed for the longest temple corridor in India and 22 sacred wells.
GrishneshwarVerul, Maharashtra
The twelfth and last Jyotirlinga, near the Ellora caves. Its red-rock shrine is linked to the legend of the devoted Kusuma whose son was restored to life by Shiva.

Dress code & what to carry
Modest traditional attire, layered for varied climates — light cotton for Somnath, Rameshwaram and Nageshwar; warm woollens for Himalayan Kedarnath. Many sanctums require abhishek-seekers to wear a dhoti. Most sanctums prohibit photography.

The optimised single-trip route takes about 18–21 days across ten states, sequenced to minimise backtracking. If three weeks at once is too much, we split it into three regional legs — west, central and south — over a year or two.
What is the best season for the yatra?
May to November, because Himalayan Kedarnath is open only in that window (kapat open around Akshaya Tritiya in Apr–May, close around Diwali). The July–August monsoon is avoided for the Himalayan and Sahyadri legs. Mahashivratri and Shravan Mondays are spiritually grandest but very crowded.
