From Somnath on Gujarat's western coast to Rameshwaram on the southern tip, the 12 Jyotirlingas form the most revered pilgrimage circuit in Hindu tradition. Choose a shrine below to explore its history, darshan timings, festivals, and plan your yatra.

The Sacred Origin

According to the Shiva Purana, at the dawn of creation a dispute arose between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu over who was supreme. To end the quarrel, a boundless pillar of infinite light — the Jyotirlinga — appeared between them. Neither could find its top nor bottom. Lord Shiva emerged from the pillar and revealed that He was the source of all creation, preservation, and dissolution.

This pillar of radiance later manifested at twelve sacred sites across the Indian subcontinent — each a self-manifested (svayambhu) column of divine light. Pilgrims believe that darshan of all twelve Jyotirlingas in a single lifetime grants moksha — liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 12 Jyotirlingas?

The 12 Jyotirlingas are self-manifested (svayambhu) sacred abodes of Lord Shiva — pillars of infinite light that appeared at twelve locations across India. They're mentioned in the Shiva Purana and are considered the most powerful Shiva darshan sites. Pilgrims believe that darshan of all 12 in one lifetime grants moksha (liberation).

How long does a complete 12-Jyotirlinga yatra take?

A comprehensive yatra covering all 12 shrines typically takes 18-21 days if done in a single journey. However, most pilgrims do it in phases — Gujarat Pair (4 days), Maharashtra Trinity (5 days), Himalayan (7 days) etc. Kedarnath is only open May-October. We recommend splitting across 2-3 trips for comfort.

What's the best time to do the Jyotirlinga yatra?

October to March is ideal for most shrines — pleasant weather, no monsoon. Kedarnath (Himalayan) needs May-June or September-October when the temple is open. Avoid June-September monsoon in the Himalayas. Shravan month (July-August) is spiritually powerful but crowded.

Is the Jyotirlinga yatra physically demanding?

Most shrines are easily accessible by car/train. Kedarnath requires a 16km trek (or helicopter). Bhimashankar has some uphill walking. For senior pilgrims or those with mobility concerns, we arrange wheelchair-friendly routes, helicopter rides, and VIP darshan queues. Ask on WhatsApp for the Senior Pilgrim Package.

What's the dress code at Jyotirlinga temples?

Modest traditional attire is recommended — dhoti-kurta, saree, or salwar-kameez. Shorts, sleeveless tops, and mini-skirts are discouraged. Leather items (belts, wallets) must be removed. Footwear is left at the entrance. Each shrine's specific rules are on its individual microsite.

Can non-Hindus visit Jyotirlingas?

Most Jyotirlingas welcome all visitors who come with respect. However, some shrines restrict entry to the inner sanctum (garbhagriha) to Hindus only. Kashi Vishwanath, Somnath, Mahakaleshwar generally allow all visitors with proper attire. Check individual shrine pages for details.

Are photography and mobile phones allowed?

Photography and phones are strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum of most shrines. They're typically allowed in the outer courtyard and gardens. Each temple provides free locker facilities near the entrance. Filming rituals is not permitted.
